J A L : Travel : Comala, Colima, México

May, 2005

Comala is a short bus ride away from the city of Colima.  We visited the tourist information kiosk in the main plaza and then decided to head out to the ex-hacienda of Nogueras, a museum that is run by the University of Colima.

The ex-hacienda is interesting in and of itself, as an example of colonial style architecture, but also has exhibits of prehispanic ceramics from this region and the work of a local craftsman and artist, Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo, who once owned the hacienda.

After visiting the hacienda, we were walking back towards central Comala when a truckload of other hacienda visitors stopped and asked us if we wanted a lift.  We gladly accepted and were headed back into town in the back of their pickup when they asked us if we would like to go out to 'the lagoon' with them.  We took them up on that offer too, and got to see a bit of the countryside around the area.

We could see the 'Volcan de Fuego' on and off during the ride.

Stuck behind a load of sugar cane on the way back into Comala.

By the time we were headed back into town, the volcano had decided to let off a bit of ash.  Those are clouds to the left, but above the volcano and pouring down its right side are plumes of ash.

Once back in Comala, we returned to the main plaza.  Here is the church, located on one side of the plaza.

On another side of the plaza is 'Los Portales'.  We had a lovely lunch here.  You order your drinks and then set plates of food accompany them.  Luckily, they were quite nice about whipping up something vegetarian.

A band plays to a table of diners.

While another one hangs out in the plaza, awaiting their turn.

A lovely blue roan horse trots past.
