May, 2006 - Tilly showed up in the neighborhood about a month ago. She was a bit shy of people, but very interested in our dogs. I saw her in the front terraces of a number of different houses, ripping open unattended garbage bags. She's small enough to sneak right through the wrought iron fences that are very common in this area. Her garbage raids were rather concerning, as some people in the neighborhood bait their garbage in order to poison the street dogs that get into it. Two dogs have recently been killed in this manner. After about a week of running into her and seeing her scavenging, we spoke with a lady at the house at which Tilly seemed to most frequently spend time. She said that her children had been putting out food and water for Tilly, but that she wasn't theirs, and she'd be very happy for us to find Tilly a real home. We took her home with us, and then to the veterinarian's the next day. Since then she's been treated for a respiratory infection, kidney infection and also ringworm. She's currently happy and healthy, although she will be taking griseofulvina for 3 more weeks, for the ringworm. She has been wormed and will receive her vaccinations today and then we will contact the local rescue organization (ARCA) to add her to their list of animals that need new homes.
We think that Tilly is between 5 and 6 months old. She's lost most of her baby teeth during the time that she's been with us. She is about 14 inches tall at the withers, and we don't expect that she'll get much bigger than that. Even though she's an older puppy, we're hoping that we'll be able to find her a home due to the fact that she will be a small dog and it is usually easier to find homes for small dogs. As she's been getting fed properly, and recovering from her various ailments, she's gotten to be quite a spunky little dog. She enjoys retrieving, carrying all the dog toys from one spot to another, walking back and forth behind the curtains, giving kisses, telling the (much!) bigger dogs what's what, and having a bit of a cuddle during afternoon nap time. Once she has her vaccinations, she will be able to go on dog walks for exercise and socialization. She is housebroken, knows how to sit, how to walk on a leash, and how to wait in line with the other dogs until told that it's 'okay' to eat. She is learning 'down'.
All of Tilly's veterinary needs have been kindly supplied at a nominal charge by Doctora Rosa Ma. Reyes Martínez at Can y Cat Veterinaria.
July, 2006 - Tilly had a reaction to one of her vaccinations and ended up with a hardish lump at the spot where it was injected. Doctora Rosa has removed the lump. We decided to have her spayed at the same time, so that is now done too.
September, 2006 - Tilly has gone to a new home!
24 November, 2006 - Tilly has returned to us, because her adoptive family feels that they don't have enough time to spend with her. She seems to be quite happy to fit back into the routine here at our house, but we are still looking for a permanent "forever" home for her.
