Animals : Mammals : Big Brown Bat

Eptesicus fuscus [WNC Nature entry]

This lone (so presumably male) bat roosts in the tree on our back patio during the daytime.

One day he(?) was joined by the smaller sized bat on the left.  The shapes of the ears and the noses of the two bats is different.  The new bat was very alert, while the one who normally roosts in the tree is quite happy to sleep through quite a lot of activity on the ground below.  The two were in close contact like the image shows all day long.  The original bat continues to return each day, whereas Lefty hasn't been seen again.

Update

At the end of August, the bat stopped using our tree as his daytime roost.  We didn't have any bats in the tree for a few weeks, and then one returned.  Now we sometimes have two, sometimes one and sometimes none.  Apparently the bats don't consistently use the same daytime roost.
