Animals : Insects and Spiders : Black Witch Moths

Ascalapha odorata [Mike Quinn's Texas Entomology entry]

A male Black Witch Moth rests on a door jam.

An image of the same moth, shot from the side, provides a better idea of the large size of the bodies of these moths, which are sometimes mistaken for bats.  The eyes glow a bright red when a light is shone upon them.

The same moth later joined us in the living room.  He has since been coaxed into returning to the Great Outdoors.

A female Black Witch Moth rests in a tree.  The white band across the wings indicates the sex.  Although she eventually relocated, at this point in time she was perched only a few feet from the Big Brown Bat who makes this tree his daytime roost.
